I really do love a good theme party. For August's FIRST, I decided on a "Surfer Dude" theme.
Since Madelyn's birthday is in December, this was my first chance to throw a summer birthday party! Hoping for great weather, I took advantage of my parents' awesome "estate" and held the party there. After dropping off one load the night before, this is what I still had to pack into my car the morning of the party. And Gary had to work that morning, so I was on my own! You can see August just hanging out in his carseat, safely out of the way and waiting for me to load him up last!

I didn't have means to transport a complete cake, so I brought the frozen layers over (varying shades of blue!) and finished it at my parents' house. THANKFULLY, my family's Australian friends happened to be visiting that weekend. Diedre's help was invaluable in getting all the last-minute details together, and most importantly she SAVED my cake by teaching me the dip-the-knife-in-the-hot-water trick for perfect icing! The cake was so moist that it was falling apart, and this magical advice literally prevented the entire thing from being a collapsed, crumby disaster, and me from curling up in a ball and crying as guests arrived.
I made the chocolate surfboards for the cake (and lots more for favors). Madelyn has her giant cupcake every year; we settled on mini donuts as August's traditional birthday treat.
Here is the table all set up! Next photos will be all the party details! Party nerds, prepare yourselves!
